Treated for Basal Cell Carcinoma? Here Is What to Expect During Recovery

August 23, 2024

basal cell skin cancer

Basal cell carcinoma is the most prevalent skin cancer. While it can be a scary diagnosis, it is treatable. If you have undergone the procedure for removing basal cell carcinoma, you might feel uncertain about what comes next. Knowing what to expect during your recovery can help ease your worries. You can prepare for a smoother healing process.

Here’s what to expect after treatments for skin cancer.

Recovery After Mohs Surgery for Basal Cell Carcinoma

Mohs surgery is a unique treatment for basal cell skin cancer. The doctor removes a thin layer of skin at a time. The surgeon checks each layer under a powerful microscope.

This allows the doctor to see if any cancer cells remain. If they find any, they remove another thin layer. This process continues until they remove all cancer cells.

The First Few Days

After Mohs surgery, it is essential to rest. Make sure to avoid strenuous activities. Keep the treated area clean and dry.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for your wound. This includes how to change bandages and apply any prescribed ointments.

Common Side Effects

You may experience swelling, redness, and minor pain around the treated area.

These symptoms should decrease within a few days. OTC pain relievers like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort. Check with your doctor first.

Long-Term Care

Protect the treated area from the sun. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and wear protective clothing.

Check your skin for any new changes. Continue seeing your doctor for follow-up appointments.

Recovery After Electrodessication and Curettage (ED & C)

ED & C is a basal cell carcinoma treatment where the doctor scrapes off the cancerous skin cells with a special tool. Then, an electric needle will destroy the cancer cells that are left.

This method is usually used for small, less aggressive skin cancers.

The First Few Days

After ED & C, the treated area will form a scab. Do not pick at it; let it fall off naturally. Keep the area clean and dry.

Your doctor may recommend applying an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.

Common Side Effects

Redness, swelling, and a mild burning sensation can occur around the treated area. These symptoms usually improve within a week.

If you experience severe pain or signs of infection, contact your doctor immediately.

Long-Term Care

Protect your skin from the sun and avoid tanning beds. Use sunscreen daily and wear protective clothing when outdoors.

Regular check-ups with your doctor are essential to monitor for any new skin issues.

Recovery After Surgical Excision

Surgical excision involves cutting out the skin cancer along with some surrounding healthy skin. The doctor then stitches the wound closed.

This method is used for larger or deeper skin cancers. It ensures that the surgeon removes all the cancer cells.

The First Few Days

After a surgical excision, you may have stitches that require special care. Follow your doctor’s instructions on cleaning the stitches and changing bandages.

Avoid strenuous activities that could strain the stitches.

Common Side Effects

Swelling, redness, and soreness around the stitches are normal.

Over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease discomfort. If the pain worsens or you notice signs of infection, contact your doctor immediately.

Long-Term Care

Once your surgeon removes the stitches, continue to protect the scar from the sun. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing.

Regular home skin checks and doctor visits are important for the early detection of new skin changes.

When to Visit Your Skin Cancer Surgeon During Recovery

It is important to know when you need to see your skin cancer surgeon during recovery after basal cell carcinoma treatment.

Here are some times when you should call or visit your doctor:

Signs of Infection

Contact your surgeon right away if you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus around the treated area. Fever can also be a sign of infection.

Increased Pain

You should see your doctor if your pain gets worse instead of better or if pain medication does not help.

Unusual Changes

If you see any unusual changes in the treated area, such as new lumps or a return of symptoms, make an appointment with your surgeon. Early detection of any problems is key to effective treatment.

Follow-Up Appointments

Always keep your scheduled follow-up appointments. These visits allow your doctor to check your healing and catch any potential issues early.

Remember, it is better to be safe and ask your surgeon if something does not seem right. Your health and recovery are essential.
