Tips for Working with a Dermatologist

October 13, 2023

Do you have several moles on your skin? Are you at higher risk for developing certain types of skin diseases like skin cancer? Are you seeking expert guidance to improve your skin health? Visiting a dermatologist may be the right solution.

Dermatologists are experts in diagnosing and treating skin, hair, nails, and mucous membrane diseases through surgical and non-surgical treatments. They also offer valuable insight and expert advice, empowering you to take control of your skin health.

Here are some practical tips to help you when you are planning to work or are working with a dermatologist.

Tip #1 Find and Choose a Reputable and Experienced Dermatologist

If you are planning to work with a dermatologist but have yet to see one, first take some time to find a highly qualified dermatologist with experience and expertise in treating your unique dermatology condition and performing any necessary surgical procedure. To find a reputable dermatologist, seek recommendations from trusted resources like your family, friends, and coworkers or get a referral from your primary care doctors. Before choosing a surgical dermatologist, verify their credentials and consider the location of their practice.

Tip #2 Prepare for an Appointment

Once you have made an appointment with a surgical dermatologist, prepare for the appointment to make the most out of it. It is helpful to:

  • Bring a list of important dermatology issues you want to discuss with your dermatologist.
  • Bring a list of symptoms to your appointment. It is advisable to record when your symptoms occur, for how long they stay, and their severity and triggers.
  • Learn about your personal medical history and family medical history.
  • Bring copies of your previous test results, including diagnostic imaging tests and lab tests.
  • Bring a list of all the medications, vitamins, supplements, cosmetic products, sunscreens, and makeup you use.
  • Bring a list of all the questions that you have in your mind related to your unique skin problem.
  • Bring a list of all the substances you are allergic to
  • Do not wear nail polish or makeup before your appointment because it may make it difficult for your dermatologist to examine your skin or nails thoroughly.
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing to your appointment so your dermatologist can easily perform a physical examination.

Tip #3 Follow Your Recommended Treatment Plan

Your surgical dermatologist will thoroughly examine you, order some diagnostic lab tests or imaging tests, make a diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan, which may consist of medications or a procedure.

Following the treatment plan recommended by your dermatologist is crucial to working with a dermatologist and achieving the best possible results for your unique problem. Deviating from the prescribed treatment plan or discontinuing the prescribed treatment regimen can lead to a relapse of your skin, hair, or nail problem.

For example, if you have a large tumor on your skin, your surgical dermatologist will advise you to visit more than once for the complete removal of cancerous cells. Therefore, it is essential to maintain consistency in following the dermatology treatment plan to minimize the risk of setbacks and maximize the effectiveness of treatments or procedures.

Tip #4 Attend Your Follow-Up Appointments

When working with a surgical dermatologist, especially for Mohs surgery or other surgical procedures, it is not uncommon to have multiple follow-up visits. These visits provide your surgical dermatologist with an opportunity to assess the progress of your treatment and make necessary adjustments to the already prescribed treatment plan. This is also a good time to address any new concerns that may have arisen.

Therefore, always attend your follow-up appointments and clearly communicate your concerns to your dermatologist.
