Basal Cell Carcinoma Symptoms

October 7, 2022

Red bump is Basal cell carcinoma on the woman's neck. Illustration about skin cancer, medical and health checks.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer in the United States, accounting for almost 4 million diagnosed cases each year.

As the name suggests, basal cell carcinoma is a cancer of the basal cells. Basal cells make up the deepest sublayer of your epidermis, the top layer of your skin. BCC can occur anywhere on your skin but most commonly occurs on the parts of the body that are most exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, scalp, neck, chest, and shoulders. Luckily, BCC is curable when detected early.

Here we’ll talk about the warning signs and symptoms of basal cell carcinoma that help detect it early and where you can go for basal cell carcinoma diagnosis in Miami, FL.

Warning Signs and Symptoms of Basal Cell Carcinoma

It is a good habit to routinely check your skin for bumps or anything out of the ordinary. Here are some warning signs of BCC that you should look out for.

A Shiny Bump or Nodule

BCC can appear as a shiny bump or translucent nodule that is pearly white or pink. In people who have darker skin, these bumps can also be black, brown, or tan, and can therefore be mistaken for a normal mole.

A Reddish Patch or Irritated Area

An irritated, reddish patch on areas that commonly get exposed to the sun can also be a sign of BCC. Typically, these irritated patches appear on the face, chest, arm, leg, or shoulder and may itch, crust, hurt, or cause no such discomfort.

An Open Sore or Ulcer

A non-healing open sore is also a warning sign of BCC. Such open sores may ooze, bleed, or crust over. Another prominent characteristic of such sores is that they may persist for weeks and appear to heal but come back soon after.

A Scar-like Area

Sometimes, BCC appears as a flat white, waxy, or yellow area that often has poorly defined borders. The skin of this scar-like area may appear taut and shiny.

An Abnormal Lump

A small growth that is itchy or painful may also be a sign of BCC. It may also develop tiny surface blood vessels over time.
