The Don’ts in Mohs Surgery Recovery

July 29, 2022

Mohs surgery Recovery Ahead Sign

Mohs micrographic surgery is no doubt the most reliable method of removing nonmelanoma skin cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. However, it’s important to take note that its success not only depends on the surgeon’s skills, but also on patients’ adherence to postoperative care instructions given to them.

Here are some of the things you shouldn’t do after the procedure that your skin cancer specialist wants you to be aware of to help ensure a successful outcome.

Don’t Engage in Strenuous Activity

Since Mohs surgery involves sutures, it is highly recommended that you avoid strenuous activities so as not to dislodge them. These activities include bending your head below your waist, lifting heavy objects, and working out at the gym.

Don’t Ignore Signs of Infection

Like any type of invasive procedure, Mohs surgery does have a risk of infection, although very rare. Fever, increasing pain and swelling, drainage at the surgical site are signs of infection. If you notice these, call your skin cancer specialist right away for prompt treatment.

Don’t Worry About Cancer Recurrence, But Be Vigilant

Mohs patients enjoy a 99-percent success rate. So, relax. Your prognosis is good. However, do watch out for signs of cancer recurrence, such as growth of a new lesion or changes in other spots located on other areas of your body. Continue to check your skin once a month, and see your Mohs surgeon for follow-up appointments and routine skin exams as recommended.

Don’t Stay Out in the Sun

Freshy healing wounds are vulnerable to sun damage. Moreover, too much sun exposure can result in poor cosmetic outcomes, as it can cause permanent darkening of scars.

It is, therefore, imperative that you limit your sun exposure as much as possible. If you really need to be outdoors, make sure to give your skin full protection by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and applying sunscreen lotion with an SPF of at least 30.

Don’t Smoke

The toxins in cigarettes essentially set the stage for cancer recurrence. Additionally, cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for poor wound healing as well as for infection and scarring.
